May 14th Meeting Minutes

J. W. LIGON CLASS OF 1968 - MEETING MINUTES

SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2011
K & W CAFETERIA - TOWER SHOPPING CENTER - RALEIGH, NC

Present: Pauletta Brown Gaither, Michael Corbett, Bertha Helen Davis, Esther Delany, Gail Flagg Cromwell, Glorias McCullers Lee, Geneva Rogers Hill, Gail (guest), Otis Allen, Janet Howard

After dinner, Mike Corbett called the meeting to order.

The Treasurer’s Report showed a bank balance of $1704.64 with no expenditures since our last meeting.

The President asked about the status of our scholarship award. Members discussed past procedures and recipients; our class has awarded more than $3000 in scholarships. Janet Howard suggested that the class sponsor a scholarship through the Harriet B. Webster Task Force for Student Success. She reported that the Task Force awards scholarships to graduating seniors who have participated in its Student Ambassador program at least 2 years and who have volunteered a minimum of sixteen hours of service per year to a non-profit agency. The selected students would receive a Task Force Scholarship sponsored by the J. W. Ligon Class of 1968. Geneva Rogers Hill offered the motion that the class provide $500 for this scholarship; the motion was seconded by Pauletta Brown-Gaither and passed unanimously.

The discussion moved to a fund-raiser activity. Mike Corbett offered to contact the Blue Martini owner for the details of a fund-raiser. The members decided to make additional contacts – club/community locales w/a 1-2 AM departure time. Class members agreed that this fund-raiser would entail pre-selling tickets @$10/each. The proposed activity date is after Labor Day – 2011

Discussion about the 45th celebration in 2013 was tabled.

Glorias McCullers-Lee, who declined an invitation to sit on the Ligon Alumni Committee, agreed to ask when the Saturday Alumni dance is moving back to Raleigh from the Sheraton Hotel, RTP. She will report at our next meeting.

Everyone agreed that the class would like to sponsor a travel event. Several years ago class members went to Charleston, SC. Savannah was suggested. Members are asked to bring ideas with details to our next meeting.

Reminder: yearly assessment, $50.00 and $25 for the scholarship fund = $75. Mail dues to Mike’s business address – 616 W. Cabarrus ST Raleigh, NC 27603. Make checks payable to J. W. Ligon Class 1968; no checks payable to Mike.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Gail Flagg Cromwell is the Women’s Day speaker In the Beginning Church, Vandora Springs Rd (across from Hardee’s) Garner, NC on Sun., June 5, 3 pm. Gwen Robertson Horton is the pastor
